Montaigne's fame rests on his Essays {Essais), a collection of a large number of short subjective treatments of various topics. He believed that studying himself meant studying mankind. So, he not only expressed his judgments of his contemporaries and the great fıgures of the past, he also noted his own joys, sorrows and pains as if talking to his closest friend.
