Felsefe terimi, Yunanca Philo ve Sophia sözcüklerinin bir araya getirilmesinden ortaya çıkmıştır. Philo; sevgi sophia; ise bilgelik, hikmet anlamına gelmektedir. Böylece Philosophia, (felsefe) bilgeliği sevme anlamını taşımakta olup, bilgi edinmeyi sevme, isteme demektir.
